Fungus on toenail is a fairly common medical condition and in the US some 11 million people suffer from this disfiguring aliment and in the UK 1.8 million. Toenail yellow, or fungi nails are the product of fungus that invades the nail bed as a result of moist, damp and dark conditions. This fungus or bacterial infection has the capability to live surface of the nail, underneath the nail and these factors are completely dependant on the acuteness of the infection.

It is common for the fungus to live along the side of the nail then as the infection gather momentum, by non treatment progress to the nail bed. The infection has a characteristically white or toenail yellow appearance, change shape, thick/crumbling and in some cases this can be very sore and distressing because the toenail actually detaches from the nail bed. This can result in serious infection and you should seek urgent medical advice. It is fair to state that bacteria and fungus are opportunists and if you give them the right environment, damp, dirty or moist conditions these infections will occur. The common fungus responsible for these infections is dermatophytes, but yeasts and moulds are other causes of fungus on toenail.

Fungus on toenail has other contributory factors such as: age, gender, diabetes, hurt toenail, increased perspiration or sweating (hyperhydrosis), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), athlete's foot, immunodeficiency, bad personal hygiene, and constant contact of nails with water.

These toenail infections are not at all life threatening, but do cause a degree of discomfort, physical and mental anguish. If you have persistent toenail trauma, then contact your doctor or podiatrist for a series of tests to be carried out.
